Investigating the role of the microbiota in insect fitness

To mass-rear insects for food and feed it is important to maintain healthy populations, free from pathogens and disease. Most animals host mutually beneficial symbiotic bacteria in their gut which are known to help mediate important functions when the bacterial community is balanced. Changes to this community can occur following pathogen infection which can either contribute to- or decrease host resistance to pathogens. Due to this potential, more research is required in this area.
